The Grand Idea

The Master Plan

The Pambula Aquatic Centre Inc (PACi) Committee had a goal of creating a year round aquatic facility for the community. The original outdoor Pambula Pool Complex closed to the public in March 2010 and reopened as a realisation of this goal on October 16th 2010. The 6 lane pool was renovated including the installation of a disabled access facility. A multi purpose pool was installed and includes areas for learn to swim, warm water exercise and a children’s wet playground. The Rotary Club of Pambula, the Federal Government, the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation, the Bega Valley Shire Council and the local communities donations and contributions provided the funding to build this great community project at a total cost of $4.3 million.

Design Philosophy

The aim of the design was to provide a passive solar solution which works for both summer and winter months without requiring excessive energy (e.g. for heating or cooling). Using a partially clear roof and a relatively air-tight volume a greenhouse is created for warmth in winter with sufficient venting to ensure a fresh-air feel. In summer, all the sides of the pool, open to allow a free-flowing concourse from the grass outside and a free-flow of breezes throughout.

The design used traditional construction techniques to allow maximum contribution by local contractors.

The multipurpose pool is a key to the economic viability of the pool and includes areas for child-play, learn-to-swim and warm water exercise – all year round!

State of the art filtration and heating ensures crystal clear water at a constant year-round temperature. A significant proportion of the energy costs will be offset with solar power generation off and on-site.

Engraved pavers purchased by local Bega Valley Shire businesses, community groups and local individuals and families have been placed in the entry pathway and add a “Community Ownership” feel to the new complex.
